Indians everywhere! Everywhere you look it's another postcard picture taking stop. Left the "World Famous El Rancho Motel on schedule, around 9 am. Sun is bright and the air is cool.
I wish I would have put on my long johns for a few hours of early riding. New Mexico is absolutely beautiful. The land of enchantment is for real. Route 66 is marked fairly well. A few wrong turns were made, but nothing serious. Route 66 is no longer a part of the federal highway system so signage is up to the state and local departments. With about 3 days left of riding we still have not camped. All that camping gear strapped to the back, and we have not pitched one tent. Maybe in Needles, Ca. where the weather man says it will be 105 degrees when we ride into town. Looking forward to Hot Needles.
Just outside of Gallup, NM
Mike pays homage to Route 66, "The Mother Road"
Taking a break near the Arizona-New Mexico boarder. All that wonderful camping gear.
Everybody should remember the TV show, "F Troop" and Fort Courage!
If you have never driven through the Petrified Forest - you must. About 40 miles of the most awesome natural scenery anywhere. One of our great National Parks!
Look at this view. You must go! "The Painted Desert"
Nine days on the ride and we are still friends. On a serious note, Mikes knowledge of Route 66 is the best. I could not have done this trip with out him.
The hotel inside of the Petrified National Park
The National Park pays a tribute to Historic Route 66, which ran right through the park.
OK, so who wrote on the rocks and when??
Petrified tree stump. Do not collect samples while in the National Park or you will be petrified yourself.
One of my goals on this trip was to stay here in a teepee hotel room. Did not happen- closed for the season. Check out these cars.
Eagles fans - check this out. " Standin on the corner in Winslow, Arizona." This entire intersection was a tribute to the Eagles. Music playing outside and video of Eagles concerts going in the soda shop on the corner. Way to cool!
So now we come to this big hole in the earth, created 50,000 years ago by a meteor. It's so big you could play 200 football games on the floor at the same time- at least that is the knowledge my $15.00 bought me to see this hole.
The end of the day at Cruisers Cafe in Williams, Az. Watched USC, Mikes team, beat Cal. Tomorrow is the south rim of the Grand Canyon and hopefully make Kingman, AZ.
Looks like too much fun Kimbo. I told Star that I wanted to do the trip next year and She said "have fun". Is that a "yes"? She did say that I would have to do it without her. No camping is good.
ReplyDeleteJust finished the golf trip...we missed you
